Léon - Graz

Nicaragua

Vamos gemma was organized by professional social workers and artists in Graz and Nicaragua (León). The aim of the project was cross-cultural communication and fund-raising for Nicaraguan street children. The money raised enabled these street children to attend school.

The BONBON-Song was professionally recorded by the famous Austrian music group "Rising Girl". Supported by the great singers and rapper DonDaga.

The script for the telenovela scenes "La fea más bella" was written by the students themselves. It was then professionally filmed by the art studio "salondeluxe".

The artists Karin Sajer and Jani Schwob, the main organizers of the project sold T-Shirts at the GIBS school party. The money was handed over to the street children in León.

Young unaccompanied refugees

Kim from Kenia

The new year has started with exciting new contacts for the Border Crossers. On February 8th Ulla and Max met Kunga Chokyap from Nepal and Kimani Kahiga from Kenia, two of the 28 unaccompanied refugees who live in Graz.
Among the countries that those young men come from are Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Tibet and Kenia. The boys are between 15 and 18 years old and live in a Caritas home in Keplerstraße, in the same building as the "Marienstüberl" where homeless people are provided with a meal per day. The young men are supported by the NGO Zebra that helps them overcoming their past. From those boys we can learn how to save money as they get € 75,-- for two weeks to cook their meals and organize their new lives. They share a room with two other refugees and spend much of their time learning German, cooking and watching TV. We also learned that it is hard for them to explore Graz, as those 28 people share three GVB bus and tram tickets. Yet they give the impression that living in a safe country is worth every struggle.
